Though it did abate a little by that time. In 2007 my TV broke and I decided not to buy a new one, since I had used the last one only for DVDs and I was watching DVDs more on my computer. So when it broke down, I just threw it away.
The funny thing is: I didn't miss it at all! Well not funny perhaps, maybe it was to be expected, but it was nicer without a TV-Set. I could move my furniture in completely new ways and had much more space in the living room. And I had a lot more time and energy.
The reactions of friends, family, colleagues and aquaintances was interesting as well. Those who knew me for a long time, mainly my family at first thought, that I would very quickly buy myself a new set. When I didn't, they got used to it, but they were a little dumbfounded, but supportive, appreciative, you name it. They didn't really think it a stupid idea, especially, since I had been watching TV for about 6 hours after an 8 hour day.
And I mean, really watch it. When my TV was on, I watched. It never just ran as background noise. I was glued to the machine. I hardly ate, didn't even really snack, but I didn't move either. And I wasn't in any way sociable, on the contrary.
I am not more sociable now, so don't get your hopes up, perhaps I never really was, but I am not less so now. But I move more and do other things. Sometimes I hang more in front of my computer-screen, but not for 6 hours a day or at least very seldom.
Now there are new rules in Germany and everybody has to pay the same fee for radio, TV and the internet, never mind if there is a TV or not. So I decided, that since I have to pay it, it'll come back in. But via my PC, I am not having another screen in my flat. Not even a flatscreen....
From January on I can and might watch again. At least Trooping the Colours, Last Night of the Proms or some such things. And of Course Sissi, all three parts and Little Lord Fauntleroy in the Version with Rick Schroeder and Alec Guiness.
We shall see, it might be fun, now and again..
